The Bicycle Travel Network Goes Live

How do you plan a long bike trip?

Having spent the last six years cycling and eating all over the planet this is a question I am often asked. In my opinion the best way to see the world is from the seat of a bicycle, buts it’s not your usual ‘beach and book’ holiday and getting started on your first tour can often seem daunting with questions like Where to go? What to take? How long for? and of course How Much? more off putting than inspiring.

I remember only too well the endless to-do lists that hung on the bedroom wall, the hours spent at the computer searching the internet for advice and information and the months of saving to get my first trip off the ground. But once I was on the road, seeing the world with the wind in my hair the trials of planning were quickly forgotten and the joys of Bicycle Travel had begun!

With this in mind I am excited to announce the launch of The Bicycle Travel Network, a charitable organization dedicated to providing, advice, backing and encouragement for a new generation of global cycling adventurers. Founded by myself, Darren Alff , Kate Harris and Alastair Humphreys, our aim is to use our collective experience in and out of the saddle, to inspire educate, promote, consult and fund other individuals and organizations who are interested travel by bike.

On our dedicated website and blog anyone who is interested in starting, or finding out more about Bicycle Travel can access an unrivaled hub of expertise at the click of a mouse. As well as our inspirational and educational motivations, we will also directly impact the future of several young bicycle travelers by helping them fund their travels by awarding BTN micro-scholarships to first-time bike travelers from all over the world.

Getting started on your first tour is never easy and costs can add up but through the donation of new and used bicycle touring and camping equipment and through the collection of monetary donations and advertising revenue, we aim to give hundreds of young people the push they need to get started on their own cycling adventure.

Travel by bicycle has changed my life, and I hope that by being a part of the Bicycle Travel Network I will be able to return the favor, after all you get what you give.

  1. Is there an age limit on scholarships? :-) I started riding again last summer after 20 years of not cycling, so I may be too old for a scholarship. But this is a great resource for people like me who are interested in doing their first bicycle tour. Thanks for all of the information!

  2. Thanks for getting in touch. There is no age limit for applicants although age may well be a consideration when we decide who to award the scholarships. The deadline for the first round of scholarships is 15th of April so do get in touch and good luck!
    Happy trails
